Strictly speaking there is no such thing as 'CMMI certification.' Organizations undergo a formal appraisal conducted by a CMMI Institute-authorized Lead Appraiser and earn a Maturity Level rating from ML1 to ML5. 'CMMI certification' is the colloquial term buyers search for — and the term contracts often use loosely — but the precise instruments are appraisal, appraiser, and rating.

ML1 Initial (ad hoc, unpredictable), ML2 Managed (projects planned and controlled), ML3 Defined (organization-wide standard processes), ML4 Quantitatively Managed (statistical control), ML5 Optimizing (continuous improvement driven by data). The only person authorized to conduct a formal CMMI appraisal and award a Maturity Level rating. Lead Appraisers are certified by the CMMI Institute (now part of ISACA); High Maturity Lead Appraisers are additionally qualified for ML4/ML5 appraisals. Class A (Benchmark) is the formal appraisal that produces an official, published Maturity Level rating. Class B is a diagnostic checkpoint — deeper than C, not a rating. Class C is a quick gap check. Published cost bands: A $30k–$100k+, B $10k–$40k, C $5k–$15k. See our appraisal-classes guide.

Typically 6–12 months end to end for a first ML3 (mostly preparation; fieldwork is 1–3 weeks). Defined-process organizations can do 3–5 months. See the timeline page.

Three years, then re-appraisal — usually at 50–70% of the original appraisal cost.

It depends on what your customers require. Many government and enterprise contracts specify ML3; some accept ML2. Don't pay for ML3 if your buyers only ever ask for ML2 — and don't appraise at ML2 if your target contracts say ML3.

Only a CMMI Institute-authorized Lead Appraiser. The firm that implements your processes shouldn't appraise them — separate the consulting engagement from the appraisal for credibility.

Fieldwork involves interviews and evidence review, so expect 1–3 weeks of moderate pull on key staff. Good partners schedule around your delivery commitments — ask about it in the RFP.

You get findings, not a rating — and a remediation list. Most partners offer a re-check after a remediation window. This is why a Class B readiness review before the Class A is money well spent.

In the CMMI Institute partner directory (cmmiinstitute.com) — confirm the organization is a licensed partner and the named Lead Appraiser holds current authorization, including High Maturity status for ML4/5.
