What is a CMMI Lead Appraiser (and why only they can rate you)

Every CMMI rating in the world traces back to one role: the Lead Appraiser.

What the role is

A CMMI Lead Appraiser is an individual certified by the CMMI Institute (now part of ISACA) to conduct formal appraisals and award Maturity Level ratings. Firms don't hold the authorization — people do. When you engage a partner, you're really engaging their Lead Appraiser(s).

High Maturity authorization

ML4 and ML5 appraisals require a High Maturity Lead Appraiser — an additional qualification for the statistical techniques those levels demand. If you're targeting ML4/ML5, confirm this specific authorization; a standard Lead Appraiser can't rate you there.

How to verify one

• CMMI Institute partner directory. Confirm the organization is a licensed partner and the named individual holds current Lead Appraiser authorization.
• Ask for the authorization number and check it — legitimate appraisers expect this question.
• Published appraisal history. Ask how many Benchmark appraisals they've led at your target level.
• Separation from consulting. The person who implemented your processes shouldn't be the one rating them.
